What's Happening at West Bayfield: Weekly's Happening at West Bayfield: Weekly

There are lots of exciting learning activities happening at West Bayfield this week. Here are some of the highlights.

Monday Mrs. Averell's starts her new times in the office (9:30-1:30), as well as the date we start our new 'drop off table' in the front foyer. We ask that parents wanting to drop off items through the day such as lunches, snacks, hats, and coats place a label on the item with the child's name and leave it on the table. There is a sign and a number of labels ready to assist! This will help reduce the number of interuptions in classrooms. Thank you for your cooperation.

It is also the day that our intermediate boys and junior girls volleyball teams have a game after school. The girls will play again on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.

We are also excited to start our daily mindful minute at 11:20 am and 1:40pm. This is your opportunity students to take a moment with their classes to breathe, calm and restart after the recess breaks.

Tuesday we are fortunate to have Eric Walters at the school to share some of his writing as well as 'tricks of the trade' with our grades 4 through 7. This stop is in anticipation of a larger 7 Author Tour stopping at Ardagh Bluffs at 7:00pm. Thank you Mrs. Helm for organizing this.

Tuesday is also the day our Grade 8s leave for YLCC. They will be gone until Thursday participating in a number of team building activities that promote leadership in our building. We wish them a wonderful trip and hope the sun is shining.

Tuesday is also Regional Cross Country day. Be sure to wish our staff and students luck when you see them in the building today.

Wednesday is popcorn day! This successful fundraiser works toward our year end overnight trip for our grade 7s, getting them ready for even more leadership opportunities in their grade 8 year. Our junior girls volleyball team plays again Wednesday at 3:30. Come out and cheer them on!

Don't forget Friday is a PA Day. Staff will be busy at school and the board office participating in many professional development activities. We hope that families have a chance to enjoy some additional activities of their own Friday. We will see your children back at school on Monday.

Have a great week everyone.

Kiss and Ride Clarification and Ride Clarification

We recognize that our school is a walking community and we see that many of our families are using "walking school bus" style ways to ensure their children get to school on time each day. Knowing your neighbors and making arrangements to bike, walk and scooter to school together is so important as a part of our pledge toward healthy active children and communities. Our safety patrollers have been working hard at the Livingston and Ford cross walk to assist our families each morning and afternoon with safe crossing.

We also recognize that there are days when families have to rush off to work or get to an appointment. For these days, we have a very efficient Kiss and Ride out front of the school. Yard supervision begins at 8:40 am and staff are outside ensuring that students exit cars safely before walking around to the back of the building where additional staff are supervising. We ask that if you are doing a school 'drop off,' that you please use the school kiss and ride as it is appropriately staffed and safe for all of our families.

At times you may also need to park and walk your child to the school. It is at these times that the Church has graciously agreed to allow us the use of their parking spots to help us with overflow parking. The church parking lot is not a Kiss and Ride, merely extra parking the church has allowed us to use for staff and visitors to use when the school parking lot is full.

Attached, you will find the Kiss and Ride route for the front of the school. As always, if you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask us.

Thank you for your cooperation.

What's Happening at West Bayfield: Weekly's Happening at West Bayfield: Weekly

Welcome back to a busy week at West Bayfield.

We are declaring the first two days this week – "Jay's Days" and encourage staff and students to wear blue and white or their favourite jersey to school as we cheer on the Jays!

Please don't forget that West Bayfield is a part of the Indigo Adopt a School challenge. It's a great time for families to 'write their story' for books. See the link for more details.

Monday is our first school council meeting. We would invite everyone to come out to find out more about how to get involved at the school. Meeting starts at 3:45 pm in the library.

Wednesday marks the first celebration of Character at our school. There will be two assemblies and families are welcome. The primary assembly will be at 9:15am and the Junior/Intermediate assembly will be held at 11:15 am. Celebrating character is a tradition here at West Bayfield and we can't wait to see what the staff and students from our school leadership team have prepared for us.

As we work toward the weekend, we will be mindful in classes of all of the wonderful things that we have to be thankful for each day. We hope that our students and their families enjoy the long weekend.

Service Dog at West Bayfield Dog at West Bayfield
We would like to inform the community that there will be a service dog starting at West Bayfield supporting one of our students. Prancer is highly trained and certified to support the students. Prance will assist the student with many parts of the school routine, which otherwise might be challenging for him. The Human Rights Code of Canada provides the authority for service dogs to accompany their handlers in all public places, including schools.

Students have participated in an information session at the school to explain how the service dog will be integrated into the school routines and procedures. They have learned that the dog is a working service animal while at school and not a pet.

If you have any questions about the service dog in the school, please do not hesitate to contact the office.
